Ep 22: Streaming, content, and sailing the high seas (Year in review with Nerds Talking The Podcast)

Ep 22: Streaming, content, and sailing the high seas (Year in review with Nerds Talking The Podcast)

In this special summer edition Year in Review episode, we are joined by our friends Lafayette and Carlos from the Nerds Talking Podcast. We take a take a look back at the critical issues of 2023: streaming services, the rise of 'content', and the potential return of sailing the high seas for Australians.

This episode we take a deep dive into what worked and didn't work for us this year. From poor adaptations of IP, to pumped up series that fell flat, to new games that we loved. We take on studio amalgamations, the loss of mid budget films, discuss the rise of 'content', let our American friends know about the Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification and how they censor and ban games and films, and fill them in on the friendly Australian and New Zealand rivalry.

Then we turn our gaze to take a bit of a look at what is ahead in 2024, and what we are looking forward to in gaming, tv, and film and (in one notable case) in literature.

Ep 21: Women in white – Gothic Halloween special

Ep 21: Women in white – Gothic Halloween special

This year's Halloween special sees us joined by Australian horror author Kyla Ward as we talk all about the women in white: gothic fiction - what is is, and is it still relevant after nearly 300 years.

In this episode, Kyla provides us with an overview of the history of gothic fiction, including the infamous 'women in white'. Then we look at the narrative elements of the gothic genre, and how these have spilled over into other forms of genre fiction. Next we do a deep diver into the character archetypes that appear in gothic fiction, and the roles they play in the stories via Gail Carriger's text 'The Heroine's Journey'.

We also explore the politics (of course!) of gothic tropes, and the connection between gothic and noir. Finally, we explore how gothic fiction is used today and if the archetypes are still relevant.

Ep 20: Adaptations: good, bad and terrible

Ep 20: Adaptations: good, bad and terrible

This episode we are joined by podcaster Andrea Martucci from Shelf Love while we talk all about adaptations.

This time, we each nominate a text or texts that have been adapted
from one media into another. Some have worked, some have failed dismally – some are radically different from their source material but stand up in their own right.

We discuss the good, the bad and the terrible of adaptations, and look at why some texts are lost in translation...

Ep 19: Endings - good, bad and terrible

This episode is all about endings. We contemplate finishing moves - what makes good endings, and why are so many ending so very bad.

We discuss our favourite endings, and why they work for us. And then look at the bad - and the terrible - to work out why they fail to engage with audiences.

Ep 17: De-fanged - Scary vampires are SO last century

Ep 17: De-fanged - Scary vampires are SO last century

In this year's Halloween episode, we are joined again by our friend Fred as we look look at the perennial horror trope, the vampire. Flip throws out the claim that modern vampires are no longer scary, leading to them being 'de-fanged'.

We discuss the history of fanged fiction, from Polidori's s novel The Vampypre, through to Bram Stoker's Dracula, and into cinema depictions including Max Shrek and Bela Lugosi. In the late 20th century, there was a vampire resurgence, and vampires moved from antagonists to protagonists, removing the horror in the process. We discuss how this change in perspective impacted vampire stories, look at current stories beyond paranormal romances, and speculate on what the future of vampire stories might be.

Do you agree, have vampires been de-fanged?

It's a must listen for interesting perspectives on all my favourites!

The hosts have so much charisma with each other but they aren't afraid to disagree! So much to learn and love with this podcast. I can enjoy more facets of gaming, literature, and movies just by listening to the conversations had in each episode. Loving it all, thank you so much for the time and effort that goes into making these. Can't wait for the next one!

Intelligent game talk

I’ve binged the first 6 episodes and really enjoyed the academic approach to elements of pop culture... the tropes in TTgames, literature, media and video games.

I also love how the conversation switches between serious academic analysis to gales of laughter when the stories come out.

Very entertaining. Keep it up.
